I wonder if afternoon tea is not a meal in itself but more of a light snack to stave off hunger before dinner. If I were being more controversial, I might alternatively suggest that dinner is only eaten if taken with other hobbits at a pub or tavern, and supper is generally taken at home.
My theory is that afternoon tea does not count as a meal. So Pippin’s list is exhaustive in terms of all the times Hobbits enjoy food, but Tolkien’s six meals still applies.
