Absolutely spot on with all of these. Long live Bill the Pony. I think a lovely example of affection is also the relationship between Theoden and Merry. It’s brief, but the affection they each develop for each other is so sweet and brings joy to both of them in the midst of the darkness surrounding them. It’s more fun, in some ways, to think about where the ‘side’ relationships would fall than the main ones. You can consider Pippin and Beregond/Bergil, Bilbo and Balin, Gwaihir and Gandalf, and more. I think also looking at the ‘bad’ relationships and what those represent perversions of could be so interesting (Wormtongue/Saruman, Saruman/Sauron, Lobelia/Lotho) too
