Best post thing I've seen on this news. Well done! Add my vote for Matt Berry as Bombadil.

Thank you! I was worried that by waiting for my normal Thursday newsletter I'd not be striking while the iron was hot, but I think it let me put more into it than I would have otherwise if I was trying to rush something out. And yeah, I would definitely enjoy that version of Tom!

I am scanning the titles of your posts and I could spend all day here. Enjoyed this post, yet retain my skepticism about new movies. But I'll watch them anyway, no doubt...

I'm so glad you can find so much that you'd enjoy! Definitely explore the archives if you'd like: I've been writing over a year now so there's a good amount of it haha

And yes, agreed: I'm hesitant about it, but hopeful that they'll somehow get it right and we'll get some more treasures!

The much-maligned Faramir as guerilla leader and Jack Black as Tom Bombadil would definitely be watchable. But if they don't do the Scouring of the Shire as priority no. 1 (even just with Wormtongue) you know it's just building on the later 2 Hobbit films to create Marvel-as-swords-and-sandals.

Yeah, the Scouring of the Shire is tough because it's *absolutely* critical to the larger story of The Lord of the Rings (it's almost the entire point!) but with Saruman dead it changes things significantly. Plus, do you recast Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin? Seems like too big a lift for current de-aging technology, but how do you tie it in to the current "continuity" most effectively?

Do you know if anyone's tried to edit a single watchable film out of Hobbit parts 2 and 3 btw? I avoided watching them like the plague until recently, and ny view is that part 1 holds up pretty well given that The Hobbit was a children's book, while there's one film's worth of good stuff spread out between the other two.

Not sure about any that only try to combine parts 2 and 3, but I know of at least a couple attempts to make one movie out of all three movies. One is called "The Tolkien Edit." You can read about the changes here: https://tolkieneditor.wordpress.com/

Another is a version Topher Grace (yes, that Topher Grace) made, but I'm not sure if it's available to the public anywhere.

I'm British so don't quite understand the significance of Topher Grace who seems from Wikipedia to have done mostly US sitcom stuff? Either way I respect the attempt. Will check out the Tolkein Edit link as well, cheers.

My version is to just lament the colossal missed opportunity - but this is (one of many reasons) why I'm not a New Line exec.

Damn it, Spiderman's changed faces every few years, why can't the hobbits?

Thank you, Jenai! That means so much and is much appreciated.

I'm just afraid they'll destroy the Middle-Earth Mythos in an effort to be inclusive.

They've already destroyed the rest of my childhood favorites.

Why can't Hollywood writers create their own worlds and mythologies and put brilliant and heroic people in them? Is it because Hollywood doesn't believe in heroes anymore?

There are literally thousands of books out there whose authors would love to have them made into movies and TV shows. Some would even bastardize their own works in an effort to get rich. Martin willingly sacrificed his fire and ice novels to hollywood and became a drone.

The only problem is that once sacrificed, nobody wants to read the source material anymore, or even watch the shows. Nobody watches Rings of Power or Wheel of Time except to lampoon it.

But that's Empire for you, creativity dies, civilization collapses, and art turns to trash.

So much to read here, wow! I might have to read this one twice!

Loved how you did this..."But they were, all of them, deceived, for another LOTR movie was made."
