My son and I are about to embark on our own little private book club, starting with The Hobbit and ending with The Silmarillion. I'm forwarding this post to him because I think he would be interested in subscribing. Thank you for opening up the "hidden" things here. So intriguing!

This is probably the most subtle way Tolkien could have referenced his Catholic faith to those in the know. It stands in contrast to the more blatant usage of the Christ motif that C.S. Lewis employed in the Narnia series...

“Eucatastrophe”

Joy falls

everywhere

like crumbs —

into cracks and into crevices,

into corners and into chasms,

Until it is forgotten—

or simply buried

between the hard places and the sad, between the sweetness of days

and the heaviness of years,

between the twilights

and the sunsets

and the moonrises

and the rain—

Until it grows,

unbidden...

unwatered...

untended...

like a weed

that turns

unexpectedly

into a flower.

This is such a beautiful and timely reminder. It is, indeed, good news of great joy that the world’s eucatastrope began to take shape as a baby in a feeding trough. Thank you for sharing this!

And very Merry Christmas to you! In my re-reading of the LOTR this year, I was struck by the majestic in-stating and coronation of Aragorn, finding a shadow of what is to come in Christ anointed to rule and reign forever. The wanderer was revealed, and not lost after all. Thank you for bringing your gifts to us. Blessings!!!
